June 2024 Election Calendar: India, US Primaries, Mexico

India’s marathon poll will come to its conclusion to headline the international June 2024 election calendar.

Key Election: India Election (June 4)

The last official day of voting in India’s massive 2024 general election is the 1st of June, but as above, we have listed the 4th as the big day. That is the date upon which we will learn the results, and see what hundreds of millions of Indian voters decided over the past six weeks.

Narendra Modi is the incumbent prime minister and the leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a Hindu right-wing party that has governed the country for the past decade. Modi is on the brink of winning a third five-year term, and this is already after having just become the third-longest serving prime minister since Indian independence.

Opinion polls indicate that the BJP will win again over the Indian National Congress (INC) and its allies, perhaps in thumping fashion.

United States Elections

State Primaries

Numerous states will hold their primaries during the month of June, and there will be an election every Tuesday this month.

On June 4, Iowa, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, and South Dakota open their polling booths. Maine, Nevada, North Dakota, and South Carolina vote in their primaries on June 11. A week later, on June 18, Georgia will hold its primary runoff, while Oklahoma and Virginia hold primaries. Finally, Colorado, New York, and Utah vote on June 25.

Ohio-06 Special Election (June 11)

Voters in Ohio’s 6th District will fill a US House vacancy on Tuesday the 11th. This is a heavily-Republican and very rural seat on the eastern border of Ohio, previously represented by Bill Johnson (R). He resigned in January and is now the president of Youngstown State University; Johnson served for 13 years in Congress.

Republican nominee and state senator Michael Rulli is a strong favorite to hold the seat. His Democratic opponent is Michael Kripchak. These two will face off again in November as their parties’ nominees.

Colorado-04 Special Election (June 25)

Two weeks after Ohio’s 6th votes, Colorado-04 will do the same. This district encompasses much of the eastern part of the state, and has a strong Republican lean. The 111th Congress during Barack Obama’s first term was the only time in recent memory that this district has been held by a Democrat.

Ken Buck (R) resigned in March, citing dysfunction in Congress as a key reason. The special election to replace him will run concurrently with Colorado’s primary. Greg Lopez is the Republican candidate, but is not a candidate for the November election. Democrat Trisha Calvarese is on the ballot for both.

Other Major National June 2024 Elections

Mexico General Election (June 2)

Voters in Mexico head to the polls on the second day of June to elect a new president and legislature. It is highly likely that Mexico will elect its first female president in 2024, with the two frontrunners being Claudia Sheinbaum and Xóchitl Galvez. Presidents in Mexico are term-limited to a single six-year stay in office, meaning the departure of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Sheinbaum is part of the departing López Obrador’s MORENA party, which looks to hold onto the presidency as well as both houses of the Mexican Congress. MORENA and its junior allies control majorities in both the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate.

European Parliament (June 6-9)

The European Union is holding parliamentary elections between the first and second weeks of June. A total of 720 seats are up for grabs in 27 member countries. At present, the center-right EPP (European People’s Party Group), led by Germany’s Ursula von der Leyen, has the most seats, while the social-democratic S&D (Socialists & Democrats) are close behind. Numerous groups sit in the European Parliament; majorities are all but out of the question.
