Election 2024 Poll Closing Times Across America

If you’ve asked yourself “When do the polls close?” at some point over this campaign, we have the 2024 poll closing times.

The election night closings will be spread out over the course of seven hours on Tuesday, November 5. We prepared a guide to show you what to expect with the course of election night as a means of both informing voters and informing those of you who wish to view the results from wherever you are.

2024 Poll Closing Times

More information can be found on your poll opening and closing times at your state’s election division website (usually the Secretary of State, but not everywhere), or your county or city’s election board website. The times referenced on the video are the expected poll closing times aggregated from various public sources. If you intend to vote on election day, please check ahead and make sure the polls will still be open when you arrive. Leave yourself ample time to vote in case there are any unexpected issues at the polling site.

There are too many state-level election departments to link individually. However, one website that does a very nice job aggregating this information is The Green Papers, which can also show you what time the polls close across various American time zones. We referenced their chart to double-check closing information we found at election bureau websites, and as far as we can tell, it is accurate.

We will highlight North Dakota as a state that has some quirks on election day. Per the Secretary of State and state law, polls can be open from 7am to 9pm local time, but it is not required. 9am to 7pm is required, and the additional two hours each way are up to the jurisdictions. Many of them, like Cass County (Fargo) and Williams County (Williston), will close at 7pm local time. For the purposes of this video, we use 9pm local time as the cutoff as it is what is legally required.
