November 2024 Election Calendar: America Finally Decides

There is one item on the November 2024 election calendar that most people in the world know about by now.

The United States headlines and dominates this month’s electoral calendar, with the eyes of the planet on this country. Will it be Kamala Harris or Donald Trump taking the oath in 2025? We will find out this month.

However, there are, in fact, a few other pieces of election business to which we must attend in November.

November 2024 Election Calendar: United States

In 2024, America will elect a new president, one-third of their United States Senate, their entire House of Representatives, and 11 governors. This is in addition to thousands of state legislative elections, local elections, and various referenda. From state to state, and even including the territories, ballots are going to be busy with many different positions up for election.

The big prize is the presidency, and what a journey this has been. As recently as America’s 2024 summer, President Joe Biden was a candidate and the presumptive Democratic nominee. By July, he was out of the race, and Vice President Kamala Harris stepped into the limelight. She faces former president Donald Trump, an historical rarity in that he has been his party’s nominee three elections in a row. The last time this happened was in 1940, when Franklin D. Roosevelt was the Democratic nominee for the third consecutive campaign.

Control of Congress is also at stake. As of now, Democrats control the Senate while the Republicans rule the House. This could flip in November, with the GOP owning a respectable chance of taking the Senate while the Democrats have at least even odds of reclaiming the House.

Election day is Tuesday, November 5.

November 2024 Election Calendar: Canada

Nova Scotia snuck in a snap provincial election on Tuesday, November 26, just before the start of the holiday season. The government are Progressive Conservatives, as Premier Tim Houston is seeking a second majority government. When the PCs won in 2021, they caught a collapsing Liberal Party at the right time and won their first election since 2006. All three major provincial parties – the PCs, Liberals, and New Democratic Party – have won at least one Nova Scotia election in the 21st Century so far.

Another Canadian Election?

Probably not in November. The federal Trudeau Liberal government seems to be on borrowed time, as the opposition plots its ouster. Even if a no-confidence motion were passed on November 1st, elections in Canada are usually about five to six weeks long. This means that even if the government fell at the start of the month, December would be the earliest month in which it would occur.

Canada’s House sits through December 17, so that’s many opportunities for Ottawa to produce political drama.

Other Notable November 2024 Elections

Romania will elect a new president on November 24, though that is just the first round. A runoff round, if needed, would take place on December 8.

The incumbent president, Klaus Iohannis, is constitutionally barred from seeking a third term. Presidents in Romania are elected for five-year terms.

Elsewhere, in Iceland, voters will elect a new parliament on the last day of the month. This is an early election, as the government of prime minister Bjarni Benediktsson collapsed. Elections were not due until the latter half of 2025.
