2024 Virginia-02 House Race Preview

We previewed the 2024 Virginia-02 House race as part of our YouTube series of brief election evaluations.

The 2nd District of Virginia was considered a must-win for both parties in the 2022 midterms, and when you see how close the results were, it’s clear why. This district may again have a significant national impact.

Most recently, we featured the Ohio Senate race in our preview series.

2024 Virginia-02 House Race: Basic Information

Kiggans unseated Democratic Rep. Elaine Luria in 2022, following the district becoming a point or two redder in redistricting. She won the election over Luria by about three and a half points. The GOP was hoping for a “red wave” in the 2022 midterm elections, and some election analysts felt the size of said wave could be measured in how many seats were gained in Virginia.

  • GOP Gains Nothing in VA: Bad election night
  • GOP Gains VA-02: OK election night
  • GOP Also Gains VA-07: Good election night
  • GOP Also Gains VA-10: Great election night

The Republicans only netted the 2nd District, losing the 7th by about five points and the 10th by around six. As we know, that “red wave” never materialized.

Democrats have their eyes on taking this one back, but as we note in the video, could the required vote share needed in some key cities be a little too much to overcome?

Next Up

We have had to push this one back a few times because of a primary and potential vice presidential implications in the state, but our next preview will be the Arizona Senate race.
