2024 Oregon 5th House Race Preview

The 2024 Oregon 5th House race may decide the majority in America’s House of Representatives – no pressure, Oregon voters.

This 5th District contest was one of the closest and most impactful races in the country in 2022, as we noted in a prior video, and it promises to deliver more of the same in 2024. A Republican victory here helped provide the GOP a bit of breathing room in the House, where as we have seen, a narrow majority has already been fragmented and strained. Imagine if they had one less seat here in Oregon.

The 5th District of Oregon lies in the north-central part of the state, shaded towards the west as most population is. Those who have lived in or traveled through Oregon know that east of the Cascades, it is much more remote. This district actually invades that space a little bit, as Bend used to be in the 2nd District forever, but it is now part of the more suburban 5th as Oregon gained a seat at the last redistricting cycle.

This created an opportunity for both parties to win a marginal district. In 2022, Republican Lori Chavez-DeRemer was the victor, defeating a Democratic nominee who had defeated the Democratic incumbent in the primary. Between 2022 being a less-favorable year for Democrats and lingering lack of unity from the primary, the Republicans won the seat.

With 2022 in the past and a new Democratic leader at the top of the ticket, will the down-ballot effects from above wipe out this GOP seat, or can Chavez-DeRemer strike a moderate tone and win again? Time will tell, but one thing is for sure: both parties need this in their column.
