2024 Nebraska 2nd District House Race Preview

We take a look at the 2024 Nebraska 2nd District House race today, which will provide a rare Heartland opportunity for a flip to Democrats.

Since the 2016 election, the Republicans have held all three House seats in Nebraska. In fact, since the 1994 election, the Democrats have won one House seat, one time, in this state. It should be no surprise that it was the 2nd District. When the Democrats flipped this seat in 2014, this was a blemish in an otherwise good midterm year for the GOP. The Republicans won it back in 2016, and have held it ever since.

However, this does not mean that subsequent elections have been decisive. All four elections in which the now-incumbent GOP representative has run have been close. Don Bacon, the congressman for Nebraska’s 2nd District, has never gotten more than 51.33 percent in a general election despite winning four terms. In our below preview video, we refer to this district as a “white whale” for Democrats. This is a seat they keep chasing, and for good reason, but with the exception of one midterm election, they continue to lose it.

Nevertheless, Democrats feel like they have a chance in this district in 2024 – and they are correct. With the realistic possibility that Kamala Harris carries the 2nd at the presidential level, since it splits its electoral votes, will Democrats find a way to consolidate their vote and pick off a vulnerable GOP incumbent?
